The question that started it

Why we are building Nest.

An intergenerational experiment in belonging begins with one question: what if the family someone is missing is the family someone else is waiting for?

Why We Are Building Nest

Children and elders can experience different forms of disconnection. Their needs are not identical, yet both may need attention, relationships, participation and a place to belong. NEST begins with a question: what could grow if these generations were given safe, meaningful opportunities to share everyday life?

The intention is to build a community around reciprocal care. Elders can bring experience, skills and stories; children can bring curiosity, energy and new perspectives. The First Nest in Mau is the first place where this developing idea can take shape. We are starting small, with planning and responsibility before claims of scale.

What “Where Generations Find Family” Means

Family-like connection does not mean replacing a child’s biological or legal family, or an elder’s existing family relationships. It means creating responsible conditions in which people can know one another, participate and develop meaningful bonds.

Someone knows me. Someone notices when I’m missing. I have a place here. I can contribute. My presence matters. These everyday experiences are part of the belonging NEST hopes to nurture. Relationships must grow with choice, dignity, suitable boundaries and safeguarding.

Why Belonging Matters Across Generations

Food, shelter, healthcare and education are fundamental. But wellbeing also grows through relationships, dignity, participation and purpose. A place can provide shelter; a community can give people opportunities to matter to one another.

NEST’s model looks beyond what people need to what they can contribute. A story, a question, a recipe or a shared task can become a starting point for connection. This is a developing direction, not a claim of measured outcomes from programmes already operating.

The Story Behind Our First Piece of Land

The vision has a place: Mau, Uttar Pradesh. NEST’s foundation is established and the land is secured. We are starting with one place rather than making promises about many.

The next challenge is to develop a safe, functional setting for intergenerational community. Planning is in progress and fundraising is a current priority. Real site photographs and further project records will be shared as they become available. Concept images illustrate possibilities; they do not document the present site.

Can Children and Elders Learn From Each Other?

An elder may share a story, a traditional skill or patient guidance. A child may bring a new question, a creative approach or a different perspective. Learning need not move in only one direction.

The Learning Commons is being developed around reading, creativity, digital learning, traditional knowledge and practical skills. Activities should be age-appropriate and responsive to interests and capabilities. Everyone can teach. Everyone can learn.

Introducing SMRITI: The Living Memory Project

Every life carries stories worth preserving. Recipes, songs, traditions, memories and practical knowledge can become a living connection between generations. SMRITI is NEST’s developing programme for listening, recording, preserving, creating and sharing.

The storyteller’s choices matter. Recording or sharing memories should respect consent, privacy and dignity. SMRITI is in development; no collection of participant stories is presented as already completed.

Building the First Nest — Update 01

Current position: Foundation Established — Complete. Land — Secured. Planning — In Progress. Fundraising — Current Priority. Infrastructure — Not Yet Built. Programmes — In Development.

That is the starting point we want supporters to understand. Proposed spaces include a courtyard, shared kitchen and table, learning spaces, wellbeing spaces and a living garden. Final design and programme readiness remain subject to planning, permissions, safeguarding and appropriate approvals.

Where Your Contribution Goes

The First Nest needs spaces in which shared life can happen. Support can help build places to belong, care, nourish, learn, contribute and celebrate. A kitchen can lead to shared meals, conversation, relationships and belonging.

Specific funding needs, intended use of a contribution and receipt details should be confirmed directly with NEST before donating. We do not show arbitrary construction prices or imply tax benefits without applicable approval. Visit Build the Nest to start a donation or partnership enquiry.

Follow the build as it actually is.
